Among the chain manufacturers in the heavy lifting industry, one company stands apart from the rest—Campbell®. Campbell® is actually the country’s largest manufacturer of both welded and weldess chain, and the Campbell® chain line includes overhead lifting slings, chains and assemblies and binder chains. Bishop Lifting Products is proud to be one of the leading distributors of these lifting products, and Houston companies know they can turn to BLP for a full line of Campbell® chains and other accessories.
What makes these chains so integral to the heavy lifting industry? Much of their desirability is connected to the choice that users have. Customers can choose from a range of working load capacities such as proof coil, transport, alloy and high test. There is also a choice in finishes, because Campbell® chain comes in Blu-Krome®, self-colored, galvanized and a brightly colored polycoat. Even the links come in a variety of specifications: short, long, locked, looped, twisted, or stamped from flat stock. Finally, some users may choose Campbell® chains in either solid brass or bronze. With so much variety, every customer can find just the right chain for their unique needs.
Alloy chains are graded according to their strength level, and BLP carries two different grades of these chains to meet our customer’s diverse needs. The higher the grade of a chain, the stronger the chain is—and a stronger chain will allow users to choose a smaller, lighter chain for many heavy lifting jobs. The two grades of Campbell® Chain offered by BLP include:
Grade 80 (System 8): Most commonly used alloy for chain slings
Grade 100 (System 10): A recently developed, maximum-strength chain that is ideal for the most demanding field applications. The Grade 100 is the strongest chain in the industry today, and with a 25% higher working load limit than a Grade 80, these chains can perform identical lifts with a lighter weight of chain. Very comparable in price to the Grade 80.
Bishop Lifting Products has the utmost concern when it comes to the safety of our customers, which is why all Campbell® chain products are proof tested prior to distribution. This testing allows users to determine the limitation of each chain when under specific conditions, prior to field use. Even though these chains show little to no stretch when they are used at their rated capacity, they do have the ability to elongate up to 20% before failure, and this elongation serves as an extra visual warning to users to remove the chain from service prior to injury or load damage. Grade 80 and Grade 100 alloy chains will demonstrate diminished performance under high temperatures; therefore it is critical to pay attention to the proof testing results to discover the rate at which the chain will lose strength at any given temperature. Finally, Campbell® chains are easily repaired, but will need to be proof tested and recertified upon refurbishment. Many BLP customers appreciate the money they save by repairing their chains when compared to chain replacement.
